Week 4 - Virtual version of the handout.

Creating An Artistic Portfolio - Your artistic Brand

What is my brand?

You as an artist, not only need to make art, but you need to try to learn business skills most importantly marketing to come up with your brand. Brand is what sets one artist apart from another. Eg. how can you identify this is ___ artist! Right away when you are online or at an art show or gallery..

Branding for Artists: What Works & What Doesn't | Constant Contact

Refining one's Artistic Voice

You can think about: What is my voice, my message, my values?

What is my style, my media, my unique “look”?

Who is my target audience? - galleries? Direct sales via art shows? Direct sales via the internet?

Who is my target audience? - demographics

What kind of artistic work do you want to celebrate/promote by creating your brand?

Biz Naming

Would it be best to use my name:

A version of my name:

A brand name:

If you chose a name other than your legal name you do have to do a name search and register it. This can be done easily online.

Logo Design

What kind of logo can I design for my art biz that grabs attention and reflects who I am at the core of me as an artist.

Research Logo design and use logo design apps to create a totally original and authentic to yourself logo design that would attract your target audience.

After you have a logo you can create your biz cards, website, products with the image etc.

These are what I am thinking of getting printed:

Let’s critique a Logo Design (not printed yet)

What do you think about the content: The Image?

The text?

What do you think about the typefaces?

The type layout?

The colour combinations?

The overall composition of the logo?

It is in process colour, would it be more effective in vector graphics

in solid colour design?

â€‹â€‹â€‹Let's critique a draft biz card

Here is my draft of a new business card (it needs visual

updating and the web content on the old card is out of

date:

Does it grab attention?

What do you think of the typefaces used?

What’s missing?

Does the website url seem to be big enough?

Not sure about the back. What do you think?

Is the contrast of text and colour too much on front?

Is the layout effective?

Let's compare the last card…(see the one instructor used to use)

Let’s compare to other artists’ biz cards. (see the ones the instructor brings.)

Optional homework: a. reflect on the above in relation to your own art making

b. Create rough sketches of both sides of your possible biz cards, this could be done digitally or by hand.
